The family of a groom in Indian Punjab has reportedly showered the bride with Rs85 million in cash during their wedding celebration on February 14, reported Indian media on Wednesday.

A video from the ceremony in Tarn Taran, which has gone viral, shows the bride standing at the venue as currency notes are showered on her - a customary gesture at many Punjabi weddings.

Guests are also seen dancing to music as the floor is covered with notes, with several others tossing cash into the air.

Meanwhile, several social media accounts alleged that crores of rupees were splurged, turning the event into what many described as a “grand cash party.”

However, Sikander Singh, the groom’s brother, clarified that while money was indeed showered during the celebration, the amount was nowhere near the figures circulating online.

“My brother runs a truck business in Australia. The marriage was on February 14. We celebrated by showering money. Social media exaggerated it into crores, which is wrong,” he said.

The event manager and DJ who handled the function also dismissed the viral Rs 8.5 crore claim. According to them, the total cash involved was approximately Rs 4 lakh, including some dollar notes. They said they were unsure how the crore figure surfaced and gained traction.

Despite the clarifications, the video continues to attract attention, drawing mixed reactions. While some viewers admired the grandeur and celebratory spirit, others criticised what they perceived as excessive spending.
