A massive wildfire in Chile’s forest area known as “Penco” has spiralled out of control, engulfing more than 23 kilometres of woodland, according to international media reports.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the blaze, which began in the densely wooded region, has continued to intensify, raising fears that nearby residential areas may also suffer significant damage.
Authorities warned that the scale and speed of the fire have put thousands of people at risk, forcing more than 20,000 residents to flee their homes in an urgent evacuation effort.
The growing threat prompted local hospitals to declare a state of emergency as they brace for potential casualties and smoke-related health cases.
Firefighters and emergency teams remain engaged in a challenging battle to contain the flames amid dry conditions and strong winds that have accelerated the fire’s spread across the region.
