Google has rolled out a major update allowing users to change their primary Gmail address for the first time in the service’s 20-year history, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.

The new feature lets users select a new email address and integrate it across all Google services, including Photos and Gmail, under the company’s AI-driven Gemini AI platform.

According to 9to5Google, users can change their primary Gmail address once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes allowed.

Cybersecurity experts say the update enhances digital identity management and online safety, allowing users to switch to a fresh email address, reduce exposure to marketing databases, irrelevant messages, and potential data breaches associated with older addresses.

The old email can still be used for infrequent services, and Gmail’s robust spam filters will help users manage incoming emails.

Experts, however, caution that no system is foolproof, and vigilance remains necessary.

Google, owned by Alphabet, confirmed that the feature is being rolled out gradually, so users who don’t see it yet can expect access in the near future.
