The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has removed the name of former President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi's son from the exit control list (ECL), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
According to the report, Dr Awab Alvi, son of former President Dr Arif Alvi, was offloaded from a Karachi-to-Turkey flight by the FIA, prompting immediate legal action and raising questions about procedural overreach.
Barrister Ali Tahir, representing Dr Awab Alvi who is a professional orthodontist and dentist in the court, told the Sindh High Court (SHC) that his client was stopped mid-boarding by FIA authorities at Karachi Airport, who cited his name’s inclusion in the PNIL (Provisional National Identification List) as the reason for the travel restriction.
Calling the move a violation of fundamental human rights, Barrister Tahir argued that no prior notice or due process was afforded before placing Dr Awab Alvi’s name on the stop list.
The court sought a reply from the FIA, which later submitted a written response stating that Dr Awab Alvi’s name has been removed from the stop list. Following this submission, the Sindh High Court disposed of the petition.
Dr Awab Alvi is the son of Dr Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi, who served as the 13th President of Pakistan from 2018 to 2024. Arif Alvi is a dentist and entered politics in 1979.
After leaving Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan (JI), he became a founding member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) alongside Imran Khan in 1996.
As per the PTI's official website, Arif Alvi's father once served as a dentist to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, before partition.
