The Punjab Women’s Development Department (WDD), in collaboration with the Christian Study Centre (CSC), organised an awareness session to mark Domestic Workers' Day, highlighting the significance of pro-women laws and the Punjab Domestic Workers Act 2019.
Held at the Women's Development Office, the session brought together women workers, journalists, civil society members, and representatives of domestic workers' unions to raise awareness about the legal rights and protections available to domestic workers in Punjab, according to a press release.
Under the guidance of Ms Sadia Taimoor, Parliamentary Secretary WDD and Focal Person to the Chief Minister of Punjab, a trainer from the department briefed participants on the Chief Minister’s special initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of women and children across the province.
Attendees welcomed the government’s initiatives and urged the strict enforcement of existing laws. Key recommendations included mandatory registration of domestic workers and raising the minimum working age for child domestic workers from 15 years to a more appropriate threshold.
Mr Basir Nayyer and Ms Wajahat from the Christian Study Centre thanked the participants and the Women Development Department for their active engagement, stressing the importance of conducting such awareness sessions regularly to promote domestic workers’ rights in Punjab further.
