Andrew Brownlee, a 62-year-old cricketer from the Falkland Islands, has made history by becoming the oldest male player to debut in an international cricket match, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.
Brownlee achieved this milestone on March 10, 2025, during his team’s T20 International (T20I) debut against Costa Rica, making the Falkland Islands the 106th team to compete in international cricket.
Brownlee’s debut surpasses the previous record held by Turkey’s Osman Goker, who made his international debut at 59 against Romania in a T20I match in August 2019.
His participation in the series underscored the unique composition of the Falkland Islands team, where the entire playing XI was over the age of 31, with most players above 40.
Notably, three players were over 56, though none as senior as Brownlee.
During the tour, Brownlee played in two additional T20I matches against Costa Rica on March 11 and 12.
Batting at number ten in all three games, he recorded scores of one, two, and three runs, respectively.
In his second match, he also bowled one over of medium pace.
His inclusion in the playing XI marked a significant milestone, not just for Falkland Islands cricket but for the sport as a whole.
With this achievement, Brownlee joins an exclusive list of cricketers who made their international debuts at an advanced age, alongside England’s James Souther, Pakistan’s Miran Bakhsh, and India’s Rustomji Jamshedji.
His presence in international cricket underscores the sport’s timeless nature, proving that passion and determination can defy age barriers.
