Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhary has stated that the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) will begin dredging the main channel on today (March 18, 2026), enabling super ships to berth at the port, reported 24NewsHD TV on Wednesday.
The dredging aims to increase the depth of the channel to accommodate deeper-draft vessels, enhancing the cargo-handling capacity of the port
He said the project will enhance Pakistan's maritime capabilities. He said that the channel’s depth will be increased to 14 feet.
The Maritime Affairs Minister revealed that after the competition of dredging, super ships will be berthed after a period of three months.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhary said that channel length will also be enhanced to 350 meters, where 100,000 GRT ships will be berthed.
He said that the capacity of 15 berths will be increased to 15.5 meters. He said that after the completion of this project, the rush at the port will be decreased and shipping movements will be increased.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhary said that this project will increase trade and strengthen the national economy.
