The Federal Shariat Court declared the government’s 2022 amendment relating to attempted suicide un-Islamic and restored criminal liability for such act, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported.
The court on Monday announced its reserved verdict on petitions challenging the 2022 legislation that had removed attempted suicide as a criminal offence under Pakistan’s penal laws.
The court accepted the petitions against the amendment and declared the relevant law void, ruling that the government’s legislation was inconsistent with Islamic principles.
Under the 2022 amendment, the legal provision criminalising attempted suicide had been removed from the Pakistan Penal Code.
However, in its latest ruling, the Federal Shariat Court restored the deleted section, effectively making attempted suicide a punishable offence once again.
The verdict was delivered by a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, Justice Muhammad Anwar Iqbal and Justice Ameer Khan.
Advocates Hammad Hassan Dar and Azam Malik represented the petitioners during the proceedings.
