The Israeli military said that four soldiers were killed and one was severely wounded in the detonation of an explosive device in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
Israeli media reported that the four were killed inside their military vehicle in the early hours of the morning in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.
According to an AFP toll based on data from the Israeli military, 472 soldiers have been killed since the start of the military's ground offensive in Gaza on October 27, 2023.
Intercepts missile launched from Yemen
The Israeli military said it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory on Thursday, after air raid sirens sounded in several areas, including Jerusalem.
"Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF (air force)," the military said in a statement.
Since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023, Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels have launched repeated drone and missile attacks against Israel claiming solidarity with the Palestinians.
In response, Israel has carried out rounds of retaliatory strikes in Yemen, mainly targeting infrastructure such as ports, power stations and the international airport in Sanaa. It also assassinated the head of the Huthi government together with 11 other senior officials in air strikes last month.
Drone from east hits Eilat
The Israeli police said they had secured a site in the Red Sea port city of Eilat on Thursday after the impact of a drone launched from the east.
"Officers have secured the impact site, and police bomb disposal experts are working to both identify the object and remove the remains," the force said in a statement.
"Search and rescue teams are operating in the area where the report was received regarding the impact," the military said in a separate statement.
Israeli media aired footage showing that the drone had hit near the entrance of a hotel.
The military added that the air force had intercepted a second drone approaching from the east.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Thursday's incident comes just days before the start of Jewish New Year holidays, when many Israeli families travel to Eilat to celebrate.
During the Rosh Hashanah break, visitors typically combine time on the city's beaches with jeep tours into the surrounding rugged mountains.
