The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has rejected rumours circulating on social media that the Rs10 banknote is being discontinued, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday.

In a statement, the central bank said the reports were “baseless” and had no substance.

The SBP said it had submitted a proposal for introducing a new series of banknotes, which is currently under consideration by the federal cabinet.

“The matter remains under deliberation, and no decision has been taken regarding the replacement or discontinuation of any denomination,” the central bank said.

It added that if any decision was taken in this regard, it would be formally communicated to the public through official channels.

Adequate time would also be provided for exchanging any banknotes that might be discontinued.

The SBP advised the public to rely only on official announcements issued by the central bank and avoid unverified information circulating on social media.

The clarification comes months after SBP Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain told the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that the central bank was considering discontinuing the Rs10 note because of its rising production cost.
