The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance president, Malik Shehzad Awan, has demanded the immediate release of trucks and containers detained in Islamabad and Rawalpindi ahead of a political party’s planned September 27 protest, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday.
In a statement, Awan claimed that Islamabad and Punjab police had stopped around 700 vehicles and containers belonging to transporters.
He said many of the vehicles were carrying medicines and food items, which could be damaged if they remained detained.
He called on the federal and Punjab governments to release all the detained vehicles and containers, warning that they would be responsible for any loss or damage to the goods caused during the detention.
Awan said consultations were underway with transporters across the country and that a decision on the future course of action would be announced soon.
He urged the government to make alternative arrangements to deal with political protests, saying transporters would not allow their vehicles to be used as part of any political activity.
