Pakistan has formally contacted India over what it described as India’s “water aggression,” raising concerns about an unusual decrease in the Panjnad inflow of the Chenab River, officials said Friday.
The Pakistani Commissioner for Indus Waters officially brought the matter to India’s attention, seeking an explanation for the significant drop in river flow. Pakistan noted that emptying of dead storage is prohibited under the Indus Waters Treaty.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the Chenab recorded historically low flows between December 10 and 16, falling to 870 cusecs, significantly below the ten-year average for this period. Following the decrease, the Ministry said continuous monitoring by the Irrigation Department showed a gradual improvement, with flows returning to normal levels at Marala since December 17.
Officials emphasised that the situation is being closely monitored to ensure water management and downstream irrigation needs are not affected, while the dialogue with India continues.
