New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner lauded his team’s balanced performance after their commanding victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the Champions Trophy.
Speaking after the match, Santner acknowledged Pakistan’s strong bowling effort, particularly in the middle overs, but credited Will Young and Tom Latham for laying a solid foundation with their smart batting.
“Pakistan bowled well, especially in the middle overs, but Young and Latham provided us with a fantastic platform,” Santner said.
He revealed that New Zealand initially aimed for a total between 260 and 280, but with wickets in hand, they were able to push for a bigger target.
Santner also praised his bowlers for their impressive start, saying, “Our bowling in the first 10 overs was outstanding.
The spinners executed their line and length brilliantly, which kept the run rate under pressure and allowed us to take wickets at regular intervals.”
Santner specifically commended Glenn Phillips for his exceptional fielding, particularly his stunning catch to dismiss Mohammad Rizwan.
He noted that the playing conditions worked in their favor.
“There wasn’t much dew, probably due to the wind, and our fast bowlers were able to hit the deck effectively, which proved crucial.
The spinners also got some grip on the surface,” he explained.
