A new virus, Meta Pneumovirus (HMPV), recently reported in China, has been identified in a patient in Pakistan, as revealed by data submitted to the National Assembly for December and January, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
According to the channel report, nationwide, five COVID-19 cases and 147 swine flu cases have been reported. Among these, Rawalpindi and Swat each reported two COVID-19 cases, while Islamabad reported one.
Separately, Karachi is witnessing a rapid spread of COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory infections. A significant number of residents are suffering from flu, cough, and fever.
The channel reported that alarmingly, 30% of flu and cough patients in Karachi have tested positive for COVID-19.
Dr Saeed Khan from Dow University of Health Sciences' Infectious Diseases Department emphasized the importance of advanced PCR tests for confirming COVID-19 cases.
The doctor urged citizens to wear masks and observe social distancing to prevent further infections.
