The Inspector General of Police in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Captain (Retd) Liaqat Ali Malik, has ruled out any negotiations with violent anti-state groups, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.
According to the report, IG Police Liaqat said there can be no leniency towards those accused of killing police personnel, desecrating their bodies and targeting innocent civilians.
Rejecting calls for dialogue with such groups, the police chief said law enforcement agencies were responsible for maintaining public order and enforcing the law, not for pursuing political settlements.
He said political issues should be resolved through dialogue between political leaders rather than by the police.
The Inspector General said those responsible for the killing of police officers and the alleged desecration of their bodies could not be treated with leniency.
He questioned whether anyone could imagine sitting across the negotiating table from those accused of murdering their own colleagues.
He also alleged that violent elements had threatened security personnel with brutal attacks and were increasingly targeting ordinary citizens.
Referring to one incident, he claimed that an innocent man travelling to attend his mother's funeral was abducted and had both his legs broken.
