The Islamabad Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has approved a temporary increase in public transport fares following the recent rise in petroleum prices, allowing diesel-powered vehicles to raise fares by 8 percent and petrol-powered vehicles by 3 percent.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the decision was taken during a meeting between the Secretary of the Islamabad Regional Transport Authority and representatives of transport operators.
Officials said the temporary adjustment was intended to help transport providers cope with increased operating costs resulting from higher fuel prices.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to retain the fare schedule approved on 20 June as the base fare structure.
Under the revised arrangement, operators of diesel-powered public transport services have been authorised to increase base fares by up to 8 percent, while operators of petrol-powered vehicles may raise base fares by up to 3 percent.
Participants also agreed that no further fare increase would be considered during the next seven days unless petroleum prices rise by more than 5 per cent.
