The Pakistan Navy successfully brought a fire aboard the Pakistani merchant vessel MT Shalamar under control after launching a rescue operation in the Arabian Sea, sources said on Thursday.

According to sources, the fire broke out on the merchant ship while it was sailing approximately 80 miles off the coast of Gwadar.

At the time of the incident, MT Shalamar was located south of Gwadar, while the nearest port was about 48 miles to the southeast of the vessel, sources said.

Following reports of the emergency, the Pakistan Navy initiated a routine rescue mission and dispatched assistance to the vessel.

Naval personnel responded to the incident and carried out firefighting efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading and causing further damage to the ship.

Sources said the operation was completed successfully and the fire aboard MT Shalamar has now been brought under control.

No information was immediately available regarding the cause of the fire, the extent of damage to the vessel, or whether any crew members were injured in the incident.

Authorities are expected to assess the condition of the vessel and determine the circumstances that led to the outbreak of the fire.

The successful operation highlights the Pakistan Navy's maritime search-and-rescue capabilities and its role in responding to emergencies in Pakistan's territorial waters and surrounding sea lanes.
