At least 17 people were killed and dozens others injured in multiple rain-related incidents across Karachi as stormy weather lashed the city, according to rescue sources.
Most of the incidents were caused by collapsing walls and uprooted trees. In one of the deadliest incidents, seven people lost their lives when a wall collapsed near the Telephone Exchange in Baldia Town, Sector 11. Six others were injured in the same incident.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.
In another tragic incident in Quaidabad, a husband and wife were killed after the wall of their home caved in, confirmed the Senior Superintendent of Police Malir.
Rain-related casualties were also reported from other areas. In Yar Muhammad Goth, Landhi, one person died after being struck by lightning. Meanwhile, in Korangi Number 5, a man was killed when a tree fell on him, while four others were injured in the same area.
In Malir Number 4, three people sustained injuries when the wall of a cattle pen collapsed. Two more individuals were injured in Clifton after a tree was uprooted due to strong winds.
Separately, two people were wounded in a road accident caused by rainwater accumulation on the streets.
Rescue sources said that six more individuals were injured in different parts of the city due to falling trees and collapsing structures. Strong winds also caused large signboards to fall on Rashid Minhas Road and near the 13-D furniture market in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
In another incident in Quaidabad’s Majeed Colony, Sector 2, three people were injured when a house wall collapsed. Wind-related damage was also reported near Esa Nagri, while several billboards on the Sir Shah Suleman Road flyover were damaged due to high-velocity winds.
