The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has uncovered tax evasion amounting to Rs30 billion in the tiles sector, Chairman FBR Rashid Langrial informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance during a meeting on Wednesday.
Briefing the committee, Langrial said cameras were being installed to monitor production in tile factories, adding that the measure would be implemented “in any case” to curb revenue leakage.
He noted that similar digital monitoring in other industries had already produced significant results.
According to the FBR chairman, the installation of cameras in sugar mills has generated an additional Rs76 billion in sales tax.
He stated that an estimated additional revenue of Rs102 billion is expected this year from cameras installed in cement factories. Monitoring systems have also been deployed across the tobacco sector, he added.
Langrial cautioned the committee that the FBR may face a revenue shortfall during the current month. He said no final decision had yet been made regarding additional tax measures to address the shortfall expected from January onward.
The committee reviewed the briefing as part of its ongoing assessment of tax compliance and revenue enhancement strategies.
