Known scholar Prof Dr Ashok Swain while supporting Pakistan’s stance has said that India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru did not mishandle Kashmir rather Kashmir becomes a part of India just because of Nehru’s efforts.

Taking to Twitter, Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University Sweden Ashok Swain penned down the statement aimed at clarifying the position of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Nowadays, Indian founding member Nehru is under fire by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its leaders have often blamed Nehru for the crisis in Kashmir, including a veiled attack recently by PM Modi in Gujarat.

Addressing a rally in Gujarat in October, Modi said that “Sardar Patel persuaded all the princely states to merge with India. But another person (Nehru) mishandled this one issue of Kashmir,” he said.

Indian Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also said that Jawaharlal Nehru committed a monumental blunder by taking the Kashmir dispute to the United Nations.

Nehru has been blamed for the Kashmir crisis on several occasions in the past by BJP politicians too.

They have been questioning,” Why did Nehru internationalise the Kashmir dispute by referring it to the United Nations? Why did he consent to Article 370 which hindered the princely state’s total integration with India? Why did he have to lose a third of Jammu and Kashmir when the region in its entirety was attainable?”

They doubted that Nehru supported the Kashmiri cause but not United India being a Kashmiri.

It is believed that the ancestor of the Nehru family had moved from Kashmir to Delhi in 1716 AD.

Interestingly, this ongoing conflict supports Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir as Pakistan thought that Nehru helped in Kashmir's accession to India instead of fulfilling his promise of a fair plebiscite in Kashmir valley.
