As the main opposition party PML-N became a party in the PTI foreign funding case, Barrister Zafarullah asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to issue its verdict, saying the matter was pending for the last six years.

According to 24NewsHD TV channel, the ECP was hearing an application filed by senior PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal as Zafarullah represented him in the matter.

Given his argument, the senior lawyer said the ECP should seek the assistance of other institutions to investigate the bank accounts of the ruling party.

When Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja asked Zafarullah whether he would give further arguments on the matter, he replied in affirmative and sought time from the ECP for the purpose.

Accepting his request, the ECP adjourned further hearing till June 23 when the counsel for the PML-N leader will resume his arguments.

The ECP tribunal resumed judicial/legal proceedings on Tuesday, which had been suspended for two months due to the coronavirus. In this connection, it had also summoned Ahsan who is the PML-N general secretary.

Talking to media outside the ECP building, Ahsan stressed the need for taking the case to its logical end at the earliest and the PTI came into power through foreign funding.

Asking the ECP to make the foreign funding details public, he said the PML-N had shared the details with the commission, adding that the PTI had been exposed.

Accusing the PTI government of the worst possible financial corruption, he cited the sugar scandal and said his party did not investigate the foreign funding matter so that it couldn’t be labelled as political victimisation.

In March this year, a joint delegation of PML-N, PPP and MMA leaders had met Raja and submit an application, seeking day-to-day hearing of the PTI foreign funding case.

Khawaja Asif said the pending petition was about funds received by the party from abroad since 2015 and observed that the funding received after that should also be probed.

Ahsan accused the PTI of sabotaging the scrutiny process for over five years and said the funds received from overseas Pakistanis in the name of Naya Pakistan had been transferred to personal accounts.
