The Ministry of National Food Security has forwarded a summary to the federal cabinet seeking approval for importing wheat from Russia, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

The next meeting of the federal cabinet will take up the summary for importing Russian wheat and if it could not be enlisted on the cabinet’s agenda then the approval should be sought through circulation.

According to the Ministry of National Food Security, Russia has assured Pakistan to provide 200,000 tons of wheat.

The ministry said Russia has agreed to provide cheaper wheat as compared to the international market.

The wheat import commercial contract is almost final and Passco and a Russian company will sign an agreement soon.

The ministry had said in August that nine ships had been booked for bringing in 65,000 metric tons of wheat into the country till October 2020.

The first ship carrying 60,804 metric tons wheat had reached Pakistan on August 26 and the second ship carrying 65,000 metric tons wheat had docked in Pakistan on August 28.

The third ship carrying 69,000 metric tons of wheat had reached Pakistan on September 8 and the fourth one carrying 55,000 metric tons wheat reached Pakistan on September 12.

The fifth ship with 65,000 metric tons wheat came to Pakistan on September 17 and on September 19 sixth ship carrying 65,000 metric tons wheat docked in Pakistan.

The first shipment of the imported wheat under TCP will arrive in Pakistan in the second week of October 2020.
