Chief Minister of Indian capital Delhi Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public grievance hearing on Wednesday morning at her residence at Civil Lines in the national capital.
According to Indian news agencies, the incident took place during the weekly ‘Jan Sunwai‘ (public hearing) programme when a man in his mid-30s entered, allegedly handed over a paper to the Chief Minister, shouted, slapped her, pulled her hair, and abused her.
The individual was identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a resident of Gujarat’s Rajkot. He was later arrested, and the Delhi Police were verifying the details of the accused with assistance from the Gujarat Police.
Some court-related documents were found in the accused’s possession.

IANS news agency quoted Delhi Police as saying that a heavy object was hurled at the Chief Minister, causing her to fall to the ground. However, an official confirmation and a statement by the Delhi Police were awaited.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office read, “Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked today during a public grievance hearing. The Delhi Police promptly took the accused into custody and are interrogating him."
An additional police force was deployed at the Chief Minister’s residence following the incident.

A team of the Delhi Police also reached Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s residence.

Reports said the BJP has claimed the Chief Minister may have suffered a head injury.
Addressing reporters, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva confirmed the attack and said, “During the public hearing, a person approached Rekha Gupta, presented some papers, and suddenly grabbed her hand, attempting to pull her. In the ensuing scuffle, there was a minor push and shove, during which the edge of a table was slightly hit."
He added, “The police are investigating the identity of the person involved. The Chief Minister’s condition is stable at present. She has certainly experienced some shock, which is causing a bit of concern. I have just met her. The Chief Minister was not hit with a stone or slapped."
