American singer Taylor Swift has opened up in striking detail about a deeply painful chapter in her life, revealing how she felt utterly alone after back-to-back breakups, until an unexpected nudge from her mother helped change everything.
In episode four of her docuseries The End of an Era, the 36-year-old superstar reflects on the emotional toll she endured while powering through the historic Eras Tour, which ran from March 2023 to December 2024.
While the tour was a professional triumph, Swift admitted her personal life was unraveling behind the scenes.
"There were points in this tour when the tour was really the only thing that was really keeping me going in my life," she confessed.
She was quick to clarify that the relentless schedule was never the problem.
"But there were never points in the tour where I thought, 'Oh, you know what? I want to quit the tour ‘cause the tour’s hard.' No, my personal life was hard," she explained, adding, "I went through two breakups on the first half of this tour, and that’s a lot of breakups actually."
Fans immediately interpreted the comments as a reference to her split from longtime partner Joe Alwyn, 34, after more than six years together, followed by her short-lived romance with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy.
Swift managed to inject humor into the heartbreak, flashing a grin as she delivered a cutting one-liner: "Men will let you down, the Eras Tour never will."
She went on to emphasize just how crucial the tour was to her survival during that period.
"The show was what gave me purpose and was what I could use to get me out of bed," she said.
"So, the tour has never been the hard thing in my life. The tour has been the thing that has allowed me to find purpose outside of the s*** that was going wrong in my life."
Beyond the stage, Swift also leaned heavily into songwriting. She revealed that creating her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, became a vital emotional release.
"Tortured Poets album is like this purge of… just, like, everything, everything bad that I felt for two years. It was a really rough time in my life, so the songs reflect that," she shared.
She described feeling dehumanized by fame and relationships, saying, "Feeling like I’m not a person, I’m just this like big conglomerate that no one sees as a real human being and like especially not men that I date."
"And in the whole process just being like… nothing, nothing works. There’s no one for me in the world."
Ironically, the very tour that helped her cope with heartbreak also laid the groundwork for her future happiness.
During the docuseries, Swift explains how her mother, Andrea Swift, 67, played an unexpected role in bringing Travis Kelce into her life.
Andrea came across headlines from Kelce’s New Heights podcast, where the 36-year-old NFL star revealed he had hoped to give Taylor a friendship bracelet with his phone number.
Intrigued, Andrea immediately reached out to a cousin known within the family as their "resident expert on the Kansas City Chiefs."
The cousin confirmed Kelce was "the nicest guy" and deeply devoted to his mother.
That was enough to spark Andrea’s matchmaking instincts.
Taylor recalled how her mom broached the subject: "So, you call me up with this tone of like, 'Hey so I know you’re not going to react well to this. But there’s a guy…' before Andrea jumped in with, 'He’s really cute.'"
Swift added that her mom encouraged her to break old patterns, saying, "You said something to the effect of like you gotta start doing something different."
The episode ends on a lighthearted note, with Swift marveling at how it all unfolded:
"If you ever would have ever told me that the most meaningful relationship I would ever have would start with a man saying he was ‘butt hurt’ that I didn’t want to meet him, unbelievable."
