Renowned urologist Prof Dr Shabbir Chaudhary has advised people, especially those suffering from kidney stones, to stay hydrated during Ramadan to prevent complications and severe pain.
In a video message, the kidney transplant surgeon said that fasting brings significant changes to a person's daily routine that can impact his kidney health if he doesn't take proper care of his kidneys. He stressed that maintaining adequate water intake during non-fasting hours is essential to prevent the growth of kidney stones.
According to Dr Chaudhary, people should aim to consume 2 to 3 liters of water daily between Iftar and Suhoor. He cautioned against drinking large quantities of water at once, noting that gradual intake is more effective for hydration and kidney function.
He recommended starting Iftar with approximately half a liter of water, followed by steady consumption at intervals throughout the night. Adequate water intake should also be maintained during suhoor to help the body stay hydrated during fasting hours.
The specialist explained that dehydration can increase the risk of kidney stone formation and trigger pain episodes, particularly in hot weather or for people already diagnosed with the condition.
Dr Chaudhary emphasized that people with a history of kidney stones should remain vigilant during Ramadan and seek medical advice if they experience severe discomfort.
