The price of onion, a staple vegetable in Pakistani cuisine, has soared to unprecedented levels across the country, reaching as high as Rs 320 per kg in Islamabad, the capital city.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, Islamabad has the highest onion price in the country, followed by Rawalpindi (Rs 310), Sialkot (Rs 270), Peshawar (Rs 280) and Khuzdar (Rs 250).
In other major cities, such as Karachi, Lahore and Gujranwala, the price of onion is up to Rs 240 per kg, while in Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan, Bahawalpur, Quetta, Sukkur and Larkana, it is up to Rs 220 per kg.
The lowest onion price in the country is Rs 200 per kg, which is still very high compared to the previous week, when the maximum price was Rs 260 per kg. The sharp increase in onion prices has caused hardship for the common people, who are already struggling with inflation and economic slowdown.
