The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided an update on the monsoon situation, stating that monsoon rains are expected to persist from July 19 to 23.
In light of this forecast, the NDMA has issued instructions to all relevant departments and institutions to ensure necessary precautions are taken.
The monsoon rains are anticipated to continue for another 3 to 4 days, leading to heavy rainfall in different parts of the country. As a result, moderate to high flood conditions may arise in the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. Flood situations are expected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Karachi, while mountainous areas face the risk of landslides.
In response to this monsoon forecast, the NDMA has directed federal ministries, institutions, provincial governments, and their subsidiaries, as well as municipal administrations, to take necessary measures. This includes ensuring the availability of staff and machinery to effectively handle any emergency situations that may arise. The NDMA has also instructed institutions to take preemptive measures to address the potential threat of flash floods in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The concerned departments have been advised to activate drainage systems in vulnerable areas and implement strategies to mitigate other risks. Vehicle movement near flood-prone areas, low-lying regions, and rivers has been restricted. Furthermore, awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate the public about weather conditions and cautionary measures, particularly when traveling to mountainous and landslide-prone areas.
The NDMA emphasizes the importance of following and cooperating with local authorities during emergency situations. It is crucial for individuals to stay informed about weather updates, exercise caution, and adhere to the guidance provided by relevant authorities. By working together and taking proactive measures, the nation can better respond to the challenges posed by the monsoon season.
