Sixteen wagons of a coal-laden freight train derailed near Wahab Shah Railway Station in Matiari near Hyderabad, disrupting rail traffic on both the up and down tracks, reported 24News HD TV channel on Monday.
According to railway officials, the freight train was travelling from Karachi to Yousafwala when the accident occurred. The derailment blocked both tracks, leading to the suspension of passenger train services.
Following the incident, railway authorities launched restoration work at the site. A relief train from Kotri reached the scene, while another relief train was dispatched from Rohri to assist in the recovery operation.
Divisional Superintendent (DS) Railway Jamshed Alam said engineering teams had begun restoration work immediately after the derailment and continued efforts to clear the site.
He said the derailed wagons were to be removed first, after which repair work on the damaged tracks would begin.
Railway officials said train operations would resume only after the tracks were repaired and declared safe for traffic. The cause of the derailment was not immediately disclosed.
