The decision to officially notify the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject in primary schools across Punjab has been delayed due to the absence of required computer labs, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
The Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has approved the teaching of AI for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The subject was planned to be introduced from the upcoming academic year, according to sources.
However, the lack of AI and computer lab facilities in government primary schools has created difficulties in finalizing the implementation plan.
The sources said that the delay in issuing the official notification for the AI subjects may also affect the printing of textbooks. As the subject has not yet been formally notified, the process of preparing and printing AI books remains pending.
Officials are now considering introducing AI concepts as a chapter within existing subjects at the primary level instead of launching it as a complete subject. This proposal is being discussed due to the challenges and high costs involved in establishing dedicated AI labs in thousands of primary schools.
According to officials, introducing AI as a full subject would require the establishment of computer labs at a cost of millions of rupees, which has caused delays in moving forward with the plan.
PECTAA officials said that matters related to teaching AI in primary schools are currently under consideration. They added that a formal notification regarding the introduction of the AI curriculum will be issued soon after final decisions are made.
The development comes as education authorities aim to prepare students with modern technology skills, while also addressing the infrastructure challenges faced by government schools.
