Federal Minister for Defense and Aviation Khawaja Asif Wednesday expressed his hopes for reconciliation with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and mustering support for privatization from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing the media outside the Parliament House, Kh Asif emphasized the importance of reconciliation in the overall situation of the country, stating that it is a sign of a good Pakistani.
He lamented the burden imposed on the people by 24 types of taxes in electricity and gas bills, stressing that in principle, there should not be any such burdens.
"We have imposed 24 types of taxes which have nothing to do with electricity or gas," stated Asif, highlighting the issue of tax evasion amounting to thousands of billions of rupees.
He further pointed out that it's not the common poor man who steals, but rather the upper-middle class or above.
Asif also drew attention to the theft of electricity and gas worth billions of rupees, stating that millions of people are being deprived of their rights due to such practices.
He specifically mentioned the staggering amount stolen through cigarette taxes, amounting to 10 billion dollars.
The Federal Minister underscored the dire need for privatization, particularly citing the example of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which has accrued a debt of 800 billion rupees. He mentioned the importance of convincing PPP to support the privatization of PIA, citing the party's past successful privatization efforts.
Regarding the aviation sector, Asif highlighted the repercussions of statements alleging fake licenses among pilots, which led to flight disruptions. He expressed optimism about restoring PIA flights and obtaining a good price through privatization.
Asif also touched upon the importance of a working relationship with PTI, emphasizing the need for reconciliation on national issues. He warned that failing to progress with the reconciliation process would not reflect well on the nation.
