A major terror plot targeting railway infrastructure in Karachi was foiled as the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), in coordination with a federal intelligence agency, arrested five suspected militants linked to a banned outfit, officials said on Friday.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Lines headquarters, DIG CTD Ghulam Azfar Mahesar said the suspects belonged to the Balochistan Republican Guards (BRG) and were apprehended during a raid conducted on the basis of intelligence reports.
The arrested individuals were identified as Commander Jhanur, son of Yar Muhammad, along with Ali Jan, Noor Muhammad Jamak Khan, and Niaz, son of Imam, while one more suspect was also taken into custody. Authorities described one of the detainees as a key commander-level operative.
Police recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and three pistols from the suspects. According to officials, the group had planned to target sensitive installations, including railway tracks in Karachi.
DIG Mahesar said the accused had previously been involved in multiple acts of sabotage, including blowing up railway tracks at five different locations. Investigations revealed their involvement in attacks on check posts, police mobiles, and passenger vehicles between June 2025 and January 2026.
He further stated that the suspects operated across Sindh and Balochistan and maintained links with facilitators. Authorities are now working to trace their network, including facilitators and financiers, and to determine possible connections with other banned outfits.
The DIG alleged that elements from a neighbouring country were involved in supporting such militant groups, adding that organisations like BRG, as well as other groups, had external backing.
Officials said further investigations are underway and more arrests are expected as the crackdown continues. They added that no specific threat has been reported in connection with Eid, but security agencies remain on high alert across the province.
