The Sindh government has grounded more than 60 percent of vehicles across over 47 departments in a major austerity measure aimed at curbing rising fuel expenditures, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Friday.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon told the media that the decision was taken by a sub-committee of the provincial cabinet on austerity, under which 1,524 vehicles have been taken off the roads out of a total fleet of 2,837.
Sharjeel Memom added that his government's move was prompted by escalating fuel costs and is intended to significantly reduce government spending.
According to the senior provincial minister, the departments affected by the decision include health, finance, school education, energy and anti-corruption.
He added that in some departments, the reduction has exceeded 65 per cent, while all vehicles in the inter-provincial coordination department have been completely grounded.
Memon said the initiative aims to reduce energy consumption, cut public expenditure and ensure more efficient use of government resources, adding that the provincial government is strictly implementing its austerity policy in the national interest.
The senior minister further said that these measures would not only reduce expenses but also improve the management and utilisation of official resources.
The minister noted that this step is expected to save millions of rupees in fuel costs, and all departments have been directed to ensure full compliance with the policy.
Sharjeel Memon also clarified that only the essential and emergency vehicles will continue to remain operational based on need in the province.
