Declaring the Town Municipal Corporation (TMC) responsible for the death of a man who died after falling into a nullah in Karachi’s Orangi area during the monsoon season, a court in Karachi on Wednesday ordered the TMC to pay Rs15 million to the deceased’s family, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.
The court, however, gave a clean chit to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, saying it was not responsible for the incident.
During the hearing, the judge observed that at the time of the incident, the deceased was young and unmarried. “And he was also healthy,” he said, adding, “However, due to the negligence of TMC, the man lost his life.”
The judge further said that it was negligence and failure on the part of concerned officials that they did not take steps beforehand so that the tragedy could be preempted.
Petitioner’s lawyer Usman Farooq said that the deceased, Arif Qureshi, was returning home on a rainy day on July 26, 2020, when he fell into a nullah.
Speaking on the occasion, counsel for the TMC said that the case was not admissible for the hearing since all claims made by the petitioner were false and that all measures had been taken for the safety of people during the rainy season.
