Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Monday chaired the first formal meeting on good governance and law and order in the province, which has seen a surge in terrorist attacks and cross-border infiltration from Afghanistan in recent months.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting, Afridi announced that the KP government would establish Tribal Medical College and Tribal University of Modern Sciences for the merged districts. He said that campuses of these institutions would be established in all merged districts.

Afridi said that playgrounds would be provided to the youth at the tehsil level in all merged districts. He announced the Safe City Project for the merged districts and said the KP government would set up Shaheed Arshad Sharif University of Investigative and Modern Journalism. He also spelled out a revival plan for rehabilitation and development of Peshawar city.

The CM said the e-pay system should be harmonized with the e-tendering system of the provincial government. He said that a plan should be worked out to introduce a conceptual examination system and eliminate the cramming system. He directed the authorities to ensure implementation of the two-year policy on transfers and postings of government employees. He said that transfers and postings on the basis of recommendations should be stopped. He said there would be no compromise on transparency and merit in all government affairs, including posting transfers.

“I will take tough decisions to implement the party agenda. It will have to be implemented,” Sohail Afridi added. He said that no political person would be arrested in the province under the notorious 3 Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

Afridi said that freedom of expression and criticism for reform was the fundamental constitutional right of every citizen. He said there would be no political interference in the police department, but then the police too must share that no public complaint surfaces against them.

The KP chief minister said that there should be separate enclaves for the police and the media in the provincial government housing societies. He said the bulletproof vehicles provided by the federal interior minister for the police were poor in quality and old. He said this is a mockery of the KP police therefore these vehicles should be returned. He said that security, which was earlier withdrawn from former chief ministers, should be returned to them so that their protection and respect are ensured.
