The deaths of a doctor, his wife and their three children have remained shrouded in mystery after their bodies were found inside their flat in Lakhani Twin Towers in Ahsanabad on Sunday.
According to police, the bodies appeared to have been lying there for several days.
Police and rescue teams reached the flat after residents reported a foul smell coming from the premises.
The bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medical examination and legal formalities.
Police identified the deceased as Dr Umar, who worked at East City Hospital, his wife, and their three children, including two daughters aged between two and eight years.
Investigators said Dr Umar had been on leave for about a week and had resigned from the hospital, reportedly planning to move to Punjab.
Police also said he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer on August 13 and was distressed after learning about his condition.
The flat was owned by Dr Umar and was found locked from inside, according to police.
The door was broken open by the authorities to enter the premises.
Police said no signs of robbery or struggle were found inside.
Dr Umar’s mobile phone was reportedly missing, while a key was found near his head.
Neighbours said the family was known for offering prayers regularly and maintaining good relations in the community.
They noticed the incident only after detecting the foul smell, while no unusual sounds had reportedly been heard.
Police also said Dr Umar’s wife had tried to sell an oven for Rs10,000 a week earlier, but a neighbour instead gave her Rs2,000 as financial assistance.
The family reportedly belonged to Bahawalnagar.
Police said the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths had not yet been established.
Further investigation is underway, while medical and forensic findings are expected to help determine what happened to the five family members.
