Former Pakistan Test captain Wasim Akram has criticised Babar Azam’s decision to take charge of the national Test side, saying he should have remained a player, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.

Speaking at a charity fundraising event in Manchester alongside Waqar Younis, Akram said he did not want to blame anyone but believed Babar should not have accepted the Test captaincy.

“I may be wrong, but I think Babar should not have taken the captaincy.

It was unnecessary,” Akram said.

Referring to the third Test, Akram said Babar was asked at the toss about changes involving seven players and the coach but replied that he did not know about them.

“If you don’t know, what are you doing there?” Akram said, expressing his criticism of the situation.

Akram said players could struggle to give their best if they felt their captain or leader was not supporting them.

He added that, in his view, Babar should have decided after the second Test to continue playing only as a batter rather than taking the captaincy.
