Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, on Tuesday strongly criticised the government over what she described as violations of human rights and democratic norms, while speaking to supporters outside Adiala Jail, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing the gathering, Aleema questioned external criticism of Pakistan’s internal affairs, saying countries should focus on their own issues first. Referring to reported remarks by a former US ambassador in the British Parliament, she said, “What we do within our own country is our matter. Others should first be concerned about their own systems.”
She accused the authorities of mistreating their own people while seeking reconciliation abroad. “How can you oppress your own family and then expect trust from others? When your own citizens do not trust you, how will the world trust you?” she asked.
Aleema alleged that the PTI founder was being subjected to injustice, calling it a violation of fundamental human rights.
She claimed that Imran Khan represents a significant majority of the population and said that when “a strong representative stands up, the world listens.”
Criticising the government, she alleged that the public mandate had been “stolen” and accused leaders of holding wealth abroad. She also expressed concern over the lack of condemnation from Muslim countries regarding attacks in Gaza and Iran.
Reaffirming her brother’s role within the party, Aleema said Imran Khan “is the chairman and will remain so,” adding that PTI was built through his three decades of struggle and should continue to operate according to his vision.
She clarified that while she and other family members may be capable, they support Imran Khan’s leadership and believe that more qualified and committed individuals should step forward for the party.
Highlighting PTI’s ideological stance, she said the former prime minister had described resistance as an act of “worship,” adding that he continues to resist despite being incarcerated. She urged party workers and supporters to overcome fear and remain committed to the party’s vision.
Aleema also emphasised the constitutional right to peaceful protest, warning that any attempt by the Punjab government led by Maryam Nawaz to restrict such activities would be unlawful. “Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every citizen,” she said.
She maintained that Imran Khan had raised political awareness among citizens and claimed that PTI-backed representatives currently sitting in assemblies owed their positions to his leadership and public support. Referring to electoral processes, she mentioned Forms 45 and 47 while questioning the transparency of results.
On parliamentary politics, Aleema said voting gives citizens the right to question their representatives, adding that PTI would continue to exercise this democratic right.
She also hinted at political pressures on the government and suggested that such pressure could have been used more effectively.
She reiterated calls for better medical care for Imran Khan, stating that discussions had taken place regarding shifting him to a hospital for treatment.
