The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet met with Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the chair on Monday.
The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has been directed to import 200,000 tonnes of wheat while the meeting was told that private sector got approval of importing 500,000 tonnes of wheat to help meet domestic need.The first shipment will land on August 26.
The ECC was also briefed about sugar shortfall. The country has been left with 1.2 metric tonnes of sugar and private sector has been given go ahead to import the commodity. Taxes and duty on import has been cut so that the commodity shortfall would be overcome by November.
