Kate Winslet has spoken candidly about the body-shaming and bullying she endured as a child, revealing that a drama teacher once told her she would only ever be cast in “fat girl parts” because of her weight.

The Oscar-winning actress, now 50, shared the painful experience during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, where she openly criticised the unnamed teacher and reflected on how such remarks affected her early life and career ambitions.

Winslet recalled that when she began taking acting seriously and signed with a child agent, a female drama teacher bluntly told her she could have a career only if she was willing to accept roles limited by her body type.

Reacting on air, the Titanic star angrily dismissed the comment and said such language directed at children was “appalling”.

Despite the hurt, Winslet suggested the criticism strengthened her resolve to succeed. Now one of the most respected actors in the industry, she said she wishes her former teacher could see how wrong that assessment turned out to be.

The actress also revisited memories of being bullied by classmates at both primary and secondary school. She revealed that the constant teasing about her appearance led her to develop an unhealthy relationship with food during her teenage years.

Winslet said she was “on and off diets” between the ages of 15 and 19, at times barely eating due to anxiety about her body. Looking back, she described this period as the biggest regret of her life, acknowledging the long-term mental and physical impact of not eating properly and obsessing over weight.

She recounted being locked in an art cupboard by classmates who mocked her with cruel nicknames, adding that the bullying intensified after she landed a role in the BBC drama Dark Season at just 15. According to Winslet, some students reacted with jealousy, even isolating her in the classroom.

Rather than letting the negativity derail her dreams, Winslet said she immersed herself in theatre and creative work outside school. Developing a “thick skin” early on, she focused on her goals and refused to allow others to sabotage her path.

Now a mother of three with an Academy Award and multiple BAFTAs, Winslet has become a vocal advocate for body positivity and ageing naturally. She has repeatedly criticised unrealistic beauty standards in the media and confirmed she has never opted for cosmetic procedures.
