Sydney Sweeney has sparked excitement among fans after revealing she would be eager to return for a sequel to The Housemaid, teasing a bolder and more intense continuation of the story led by what she describes as 'female rage'.
The 28-year-old actress made the remarks while promoting the newly released film, which is based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling 2022 novel.
Sweeney stars as Millie, a troubled young woman who takes up work as a live-in housemaid in a bid to rebuild her life and escape a dark past.
What begins as a fresh start soon turns unsettling as secrets inside her employers’ seemingly perfect home begin to surface.
Speaking to People, Sweeney said she would “love” to reprise the role if a sequel were to move forward.
She described herself as a longtime fan of McFadden’s books and expressed enthusiasm about seeing more of the story translated to the screen.
According to the actress, returning to Millie’s world would be just as exciting for her as it would be for fans of the novel.
Sweeney also offered insight into why the character resonated so deeply with her.
She described Millie as “spicy” and resilient, adding that the character knows what she believes in and is unafraid to stand up for herself.
The actress said she is particularly drawn to films that fully embrace strong, emotionally charged female characters, noting that she enjoys stories that explore anger, resistance and survival from a woman’s perspective.
In The Housemaid, Millie works for Nina Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried, whose polished exterior hides disturbing realities.
Nina is married to Andrew Winchester, portrayed by Brandon Sklenar, and as the story unfolds, Millie finds herself trapped in a dangerous psychological game. The film’s official logline describes it as a “seductive game of secrets, scandal and power.”
Director Paul Feig has praised the on-screen chemistry between Sweeney and Seyfried, calling it a major strength of the film.
He noted that both actresses bring powerful energy to their roles, quickly pulling audiences into the tense world of the story.
Notably, both women also served as executive producers on the project.
