The Ecumenical Commission for Human Development (ECHD) hosted a three-day training workshop titled ‘Economic, Ecological, and Gender Injustice in Pakistan: Advocacy, Diakonia, and Prophetic Witness among Young People’ at the National Council of Churches in Pakistan, Lahore.
According to a press release, the workshop brought together young leaders, students, religious social activists, and community workers from across the country, aiming to equip youth with the tools to address societal injustices, including economic exploitation, environmental challenges, and gender inequality.
The inaugural session highlighted pressing issues, including poverty, climate resilience, shrinking civic spaces, and gender disparity. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their potential as change-makers within churches and civil society.
James Rehmat, ECHD’s Executive Director, emphasised the church’s role in advocating for rights and empowering communities. Prof Mushtaq Azhar provided theological insights, drawing on Scripture to showcase prophetic traditions that inspire justice-oriented action.
Academic Naureen Akhtar explored gender justice and education as a catalyst for social transformation, while Wajahat Batool from the Youth Commission for Human Rights guided sessions on youth-led activism and civic participation. Pastor Khuram Younus, lecturer at FGA Theological Seminary, discussed diakonia and prophetic service, urging churches to actively support marginalised communities.
Through interactive group work, case studies, and analysis, participants identified local injustices and developed faith-based advocacy agendas to raise awareness and drive social change in their communities.
The workshop concluded with a strong commitment from participants to translate learning into action, advocacy, and community engagement. ECHD reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing theologically informed, socially conscious, and proactive leaders for a just, inclusive, and sustainable Pakistan.
