Lahore High Court Multan Bench has decided to fix the hearing on Underage Marriage Act 2026 of Punjab Government on February 23 (Monday), reported 24NewsHD TV Channel.
High Court Justice Chaudhry Sultan Mahmood will hear the petition filed by Mufti Abdul Qavi through Advocate Asif Chaudhry.
The petitioner contended that the ordinance is contrary to the Quran and Sunnah. The 18-year age limit is against Islamic teachings, lawyer Asif Ch said. He further said that the Governor of Punjab can issue ordinances in emergency situations through Article 128.
The lawyer of the petitioner said that the assembly was present, why was the ordinance brought despite there being no emergency.
He raised an objection for not seeking consultation with the Council of Islamic Ideology. Moreover, the provisions for punishing marriage officials and parents were challenged in the SC.
The case will be heard in Multan Bench or Principal Seat Lahore, the decision will be made by the Registrar's Office, the petitioner's lawyer said.
