As per the preliminary fire safety report compiled in the wake of an inferno at Gul Plaza in Karachi, 682 plazas, markets and shopping malls in Lahore have been placed in category D, while 13 have been declared completely unsafe, showing that buildings in the provincial capital are at greater risk of catching fire, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
Compiled by the Punjab Emergency and Rescue Department, the report says that 2,214 buildings were surveyed across Punjab.
Out of these, 1,722 buildings fall in category D.
It is pertinent to mention here that the buildings without fire alarms, sprinklers and emergency exit are placed in category D.
The report informs that there are 65 buildings in the province which fall in category A, while 129 in category B and 284 in category C.
On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had also ordered that fire safety systems should be installed in all structures.
Meanwhile, notices have been issued to the owners of D-category buildings in which they have been asked to install fire safety systems immediately.
It has also been conveyed to them that fines will be imposed and legal action will be taken in case of non-compliance with the orders since there is no alternative to human life.
