At least three tourists died, four others received injuries and more than 15 went missing from Thak Road when a flashflood swept away eight vehicles in the mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan province, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday.
Rescuers shifted the injured to tourists to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to an official spokesperson, one of the injured tourists was in a critical condition.
Besides sweeping away eight vehicles, the floodwater destroyed the road and communication network in the area, leaving thousands of tourists stranded. Tourists stranded on Babusar Road were rescued by the state authorities and hundreds of them were sheltered by the local population.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a cloudburst caused a heavy flashflood and land-sliding in a radius of 7-8 kilometers around Babusar Top, damaging the road at 14-15 points. Tourists stranded in different areas were rescued to safety in Chilas.
An operation has been started to retrieve the vehicles buried under the rubble sliding from the mountain.
The Karakoram Highway has been closed at Lal Pahari and Tatta Pani.
