Continuous heavy rainfall in the federal capital has led to severe flooding in parts of Saidpur, where water levels surged dangerously due to illegal constructions obstructing natural drainage routes, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Monday.
The increased water flow caused a car to plunge into a drain, while several vehicles parked near Saidpur Food Street were washed away, eyewitnesses and officials confirmed.
With drains overflowing under pressure, low-lying areas also experienced severe water stagnation, adding to the chaos. The sanitation teams are currently engaged in emergency drainage efforts despite ongoing rain, according to a city administration spokesperson.
The spokesperson blamed unauthorised construction and encroachments for worsening the flood situation, especially in vulnerable areas like Saidpur.
“These illegal structures have narrowed the natural waterways. As soon as the rain stops, we will begin demolishing all such constructions,” the official stated, adding that a full-scale anti-encroachment operation will continue until the area is cleared.
With the monsoon spell expected to persist, authorities are urging residents in flood-prone zones to remain alert and cooperate with emergency teams.
