The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Saturday urged Lahore police to launch an immediate crackdown on underage and reckless motorbike riding during the Eid holidays, warning that the practice could lead to a sharp rise in road accidents and put additional pressure on hospitals, 24NewsHD TV reported.
In a statement issued on Saturday, PMA Lahore President Prof Shahid Malik said large numbers of children and young riders were already visible on roads in Lahore and other parts of Punjab.
"They are often violating traffic rules through underage driving, double and triple riding, and in some cases carrying four passengers on motorcycles while engaging in dangerous racing", he added.
He warned that hospitals could face a surge in patients suffering fractures, trauma, and other serious injuries if authorities failed to intervene in time.
Malik criticised what he described as weak enforcement by traffic police, saying officers were frequently present on roads but often acted as “silent spectators” instead of taking firm action against blatant traffic violations.
He called on the IGP and the chief traffic officer Lahore to issue immediate directives for strict enforcement, particularly during all three days of Eid, to ensure that underage riders were not allowed on motorcycles under any circumstances.
The PMA chief also recalled that similar negligence during Eid last year had led to numerous accidents and loss of life, urging authorities to prevent a repeat of such avoidable tragedies this year.
