A 27-year-old woman died at the weekend after being thrown from a fairground ride in central France, officials and local media said.

Although she was admitted to hospital, the woman "did not survive her injuries" after being hurled from the ride at a travelling fair in Blois late on Saturday evening, the city authorities said on Sunday.

A man who owns and operates the ride has been arrested and had his custody extended overnight from Sunday to Monday, Blois prosecutor Charlotte Beluet said.

The woman had followed usual safety precautions, including using a barrier supposed to keep passengers on board, Beluet added.

Prosecutors are examining the ride and a video of the incident captured by a bystander.

Themed on the NFL American football league, the attraction sported a giant replica ball on its hub, with spinning passenger cars each holding two or three people, local daily Nouvelle Republique reported.

The whole fair was closed on Sunday, which was supposed to be the final day of its three-week run in Blois, city hall said.

Local authorities added that the city "hires an external consultancy every year at its own cost and without being required to do so... to check the facilities are in line with regulations" at the fair.

France has seen several deaths at fairgrounds in recent years.

In August, a 17-year-old boy was killed and a 19-year-old woman severely injured on a ride in Cap d'Agde in the southwest.

And in June, a 16-year-old boy was killed in Saintes, western France, when he was thrown off an accelerating ride.

In February last year, a 22-year-old student died after falling from a ride at a funfair in Clermont Ferrand in central France.
