Prince William’s vision of a leaner monarchy may not be without its challenges, royal experts have warned.
The Prince of Wales, who has long supported a “slimmed down” monarchy focused on fewer senior working royals, is being reminded that such an approach could weaken the bond between the Royal Family and the British public.
Royal commentator Robert Jobson told The Sun that public connection remains central to the monarchy’s survival. “People do turn out when they see, particularly people like Sophie Wessex and the new Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward,” he explained. “They turn out in droves. They like that connection. And if you lose that connection, the monarchy actually loses something that it's about. I think you’ve got to be careful what you wish for.”
Jobson’s comments highlight concerns that cutting back the number of senior royals available for public engagements could leave gaps, particularly at regional and local levels where members of the extended family have historically played important roles.
Royal expert Matt Wilkinson added that William’s focus is firmly on raising his three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—while balancing his royal duties.
“He’s very much focusing on his young family,” Wilkinson said. “Remember, Charles as King doesn’t have a very young family that he has to make sure he’s at home when they get back from school—that’s what William enjoys. He enjoys the school run, and he wants to bring his children up in the countryside. His life is very different to what King Charles’ is.”
Wilkinson also contrasted William’s parenting style with that of the late Queen Elizabeth II, noting: “She worked extremely hard when she was bringing up her children, but that’s what William perhaps is choosing not to do. But it’s a different era as well.”
The debate over a slimmed monarchy has intensified in recent years, particularly following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and amid ongoing scrutiny of the Royal Family’s role in modern Britain. While King Charles III has also signaled support for a more streamlined institution, experts caution that fewer working royals could make it harder to maintain the visibility and accessibility that have long underpinned public support.
For Prince William, the challenge will be striking a balance between preserving that essential royal connection and carving out the modern, family-oriented monarchy he envisions for the future.
