After Karachi almost drowned on Tuesday due to torrential rain, which turned roads into rivers, caused flight disruptions, and claimed at least 14 lives in the city, some continued to take the downpour as an “adventure”, venturing out for drives and uploading a lot about their rainy escapades on social media.

In the wake of the critical situation in Karachi, popular activist and cricketer Waseem Akram’s wife, Shaniera Akram, took to her Instagram stories and shared some videos of people being terribly stuck in flooded areas with waist-high water in their cars. She also condemned some influencers’ insensitive actions of celebrating and sharing rainy moments while many were suffering from the destruction.

Expressing distress over the same, she wrote: “Soooo sad! If I see another person in Karachi enjoying the rain when so many are suffering, I will call it ‘very insensitive’!”

In another story, she furthered, “First, think of every family that saved up for a car and has no insurance, then every food delivery guy who can’t work, every shopkeeper or market cart who can’t open, every kid that can’t get to school, and every home that’s been destroyed! Then post a pic about how nice the rain is!”

Stressing the same, she added: “Please be mindful, take caution when you go out in the rain, and be aware that so many are affected by these floods. When you drive your car out in the flood to just get a selfie, it’s insensitive to the people who have actually lost theirs.”

In another story, she emphasized her point and warned others against unnecessary risks by adding: “If you can’t swim, don’t go out in the rain and certainly don’t do it for a selfie. Stay indoors, be safe or enjoy the rain safely without having to have the authorities rescue you as well!”
