According to the report, a British news agency has claimed that US President Donald Trump could directly target Iranian leaders and that the US military may attempt to destabilise or even overthrow the Iranian government if hostilities intensify. The report has added to growing speculation about Washington’s intentions amid rising regional tensions.
According to international media reports, the USS Gerald R. Ford-led US carrier strike group has entered the Mediterranean Sea, while American aircraft have reportedly taken positions at air bases in Portugal, signalling heightened military preparedness.
In an interview with American television, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the possibility of a military solution to the nuclear dispute, insisting that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward. He said that during negotiations, the United States had not demanded a complete halt to uranium enrichment, suggesting that space for dialogue remains.
Araghchi, however, warned that Iran is prepared to take defensive measures if negotiations fail. He cautioned that any American attack would further complicate an already fragile regional situation and declared that any use of force against Iran would be met with a proportional response.
Amid mounting tensions, Qatar stepped in diplomatically. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman held a telephone conversation with the Iranian foreign minister to discuss the evolving situation and efforts to de-escalate tensions. He emphasized that dialogue between Washington and Tehran must continue and that disputes should be resolved through diplomatic channels. Qatar, he said, seeks a peaceful resolution to preserve regional peace and stability.
The United Nations also voiced concern over the growing crisis, urging both sides to pursue diplomacy and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions. A UN statement described increased military activity and exercises in the region as alarming and warned that recent rhetoric and military measures pose a threat to regional and global stability. The organization appealed to both countries to exercise restraint and act responsibly.
